FLO London | 24 hours at Thyme Hotel

Thyme is not just a hotel – founder, Caryn Hibbert, refers to it as ‘a village within a village’. Of course there are 31 bedrooms and a self-catered cottage situated across the grounds and gardens, but there is also the Ox Barn restaurant; the Baa bar; the Meadow spa featuring a spring water swimming pool and tennis court; balcony room and piggery boutiques selling homewares and clothing; the school where you can take cooking classes or floristry lessons; the farm, kitchen gardens, orc...

FLO London | In conversation with Jemma Powell

Jemma Powell, an Oxfordshire-based artist, originally from Sussex, is known for her observational landscapes. She is also an accomplished actress having featured in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, The Secret Garden, The Stranger, and Foyle’s War to name just a few. We caught up a few days before the opening of her exhibition, The Golden Thread. Jemma was so visibly passionate about not just art, but life, and is full of inspiration, whilst being completely inspiring herself – the show consists...

An Introduction to Community Engagement

This is a quick guide to Community Engagement which contains some essential pointers for team members working on projects with a public facing aspect. This guide is particularly aimed at live project delivery including both small- and large-scale projects. Community Engagement Leads (CEL) are integral members of a project delivery team. Depending on the size of your project, this may be a standalone role or a combined function e.g., a site supervisor or a project manager may be taking on a few different roles.

FLO London | Waterworks 2023 Review, Gunnersbury Park

This was Waterworks third instalment, and the line-up was massive with loads of DJ greats including Eliza Rose, Eris Drew, Call Super, Palms Trax, Dr Banana, Amaliah, Anz, Lukas Wigflex, and Pearson Sound. One unique thing about Waterworks is their bold assertion that they have no headliners. Every artist is booked because they represent a section of the diverse talent that makes up London’s underground music scene – everyone has their place on the line up, which is a message we love. It’s also a...

What it means to be black in a British boarding school

The Sutton Trust found that Britain’s most influential people are five times more likely to have been to private school. Influential people that attended private school include members of the government, judges, lawyers, armed forces officers, MPs, Whitehall permanent secretaries, and top CEOs. Additionally, The Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission found in 2019 that ‘class privilege remains entrenched’, and so it becomes glaringly obvious that privilege is concreted in the very foundations of our society. School years are the most formative of a person’s life, and as a result, we need to be doing more at this age to stamp out racist thought, ideology and abuse. Debunking the negative stereotypes and narratives that lead to racism is key. This is necessary to ensure that anti-racism ideology penetrates this bubble and is fed down from the upper echelons of society.

Life in Lockdown: Stop Worrying About Being Productive - Focus On Being Happy

After discussing the idea of happiness with some friends it became clear that everyone has a different idea of happiness. Lockdown has presented a number of challenges but it has also allowed people to explore their hobbies and passions. With the shutdown of many restaurants, takeaways and shops our eating habits have had to shift dramatically and for many that has meant an increased amount of time spent in the kitchen – although you are still able to support local businesses and get takeaways,

Core values

Eiffage Kier and HS2’s core values are very similar – leadership, respect, integrity, and safety – and align closely with Careys’. Careys started in 1969 with a simple set of principles: keeping promises, taking care of our people, and delivering the highest quality of works. As we celebrate our 50th birthday, these values are still at the core of our business. We call this The Carey Way and it is championed by the second generation of the Carey family, who still run the business today.

BIM Case Study

Careys was appointed by Qatari Diar to complete a range of works on this site, including the internal soft strip, external works, secant piling and excavation to create a new enlarged basement perimeter, retaining the historic facade and diagrid floor, complete refurbishment and demolition asbestos survey and the subsequent removal of all asbestos identified, structural alterations, and protecting historic assets - such as the famous gold eagle that guards the entrance.

Interface with neighbours, focus on Network Rail and LUL

Careys has a variety of experience working in central London where tight site footprints, challenging logistics, and adjoining neighbours are commonplace. We have dedicated community liaison officers that are available to work on certain projects and we work to a live key stakeholder matrix which is adapted to every project. We will use BPSDC’s key interfaces list from section one of the PQQ as a starting point to build our stakeholder matrix for this project.

Review: Bob Dylan at O2 Guildhall, Southampton

Bob Dylan is notorious for being a bit hit and miss at his live shows, and at his recent gig at the O2 Guildhall in Southampton he was one hundred per cent a hit. Dylan stands as one of the most iconic, and legendary music artists of all time. His music has been in the popular sphere since the 1960s, and his talents lie particularly in his incredible lyrics and song writing flair. Huge tracks like ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’, and ‘Hurricane’, were written in times of huge social upheaval and became an
